Jamshedpur Tarapore School launches ‘Bookless Day’: when learning becomes fun

Jamshedpur, April 30: In an innovative move, Tarapore School has launched the “Day Without Books” concept which is planned as a monthly event. The concept, akin to the saying “All work and no play makes Jack a boring boy”, a day without books but learning through various activities was introduced on Friday, April 29.
The monthly “Day Without Books” will be organized to engage students in various innovative projects that will allow them to learn the subjects of the curriculum as well as topics beyond the prescribed texts. The first Day Without Books was organized on Friday 29 April, also celebrated as International Dance Day. The first day of No Books Day featured several activities divided into classes.
Kindergarten children learned costumes for different dance forms. The teachers showed them different costumes for different dances like ballets, hip-hop, bhangra and garba. The children then designed costumes and shoes using tear and glue, sand and mirror.
Students in Stds I and II created colorful jewelry, and using ice cream sticks and paper, they created various types of dolls. Teachers taught them the basic steps of Bharat Natyam, the classical Indian dance form. The students also participated in activities that taught them the functions of the sensory organs and to improve the pronunciation of different words.
Students from Stds III to V came dressed in traditional Garba and Bhangra costumes and after learning the basic steps they performed the dances in a brilliant collage of colours. They also learned how to do Saka and Gregorian calendars, Japanese multiplications and did activities to reinforce their naming concepts.
While the students of Std VI made a balance beam and a clock and learned the concept of measurement, those of Std VII, made light collages on different dance forms and discussed how the geographical characteristics of places and countries played an important role in the concepts of dance forms. An almost identical subject regarding dances as in the case of Std VII students, their Std VIII counterparts depicted dance forms and costumes through palm painting. Students in this class also made puppets representing various characters from stories included in the curriculum designed to enable them to understand and tell these stories.
Std IX students learned about the kite-making process and, upon completion, flew their kites with messages for their loved ones. Std X students learned how to create their own websites. Economics students honed their marketing skills by making various items from scraps and advertising their products for marketing. These activities have been designed to make them understand the nuances of business concepts.
Science students from Std. XII discovered the different types of unit cells like SSC, BCC and FCC by creating models with plastic balls and using them with a ruler to determine the relationship between the edge length and the radius of an atom, the rank of an atom and its position. Std XII business students participated in a project on financial management. These students received a hypothetical amount for the capital investment and multiplied the amount over three years. They were presented with various options to identify the best possible area for capital investment, then had to explain the pros and cons of their choices. Students opting for the Humanities segment of Std XII, made collages of dance forms chosen by them and researched the countries of origin and transformation of these forms over the years. They also taught the basic steps of their chosen dance forms to their peers.
