A Pakistani artist is on track to complete what he calls a one-of-a-kind project to mold the Holy Quran with gold and aluminum-plated words, part of which will be on display at Expo 2020 Dubai.

“Expo 2020 Dubai is one of the biggest events held in the region. I consider it the ideal platform to present my creative work to millions of visitors over a six month period, ”says internationally renowned artist Shahid Rassam.

Addressing a press conference at the Pakistani Dubai Association, Rassam said he will present Surah Rahman as part of the world’s largest Holy Quran to be presented at Expo 2020 Dubai.

Award-winning artist Shahid Rassam, who is developing the first such project to mold the Holy Quran with aluminum and gold-plated words, said he will display “Surah Rahman – the heart of the Holy Quran” as part of his creative concept which is in line with the Expo them of “Creating minds, creating the future”.

“I will use around 200kg of gold and 2,000kg of aluminum to cast around 80,000 words on 550 pages. Each page will be 150 words,” Rassam said.

The creative artist said he is committed to completing the project by 2025 after showing part of it at Expo 2020 Dubai.

Rassam, who is director of the Arts and Crafts Institute of the Arts Council in Karachi, praises the UAE’s wise and visionary leadership in hosting a six-month exhibition despite the harsh environment in the world following the Covid-19 pandemic. .

In developing the project, he said that the Holy Quran was inscribed on a high-quality canvas with aluminum and gold-plated letters for the first time in more than 1,400 Islamic stories.

“The holy book so far written with the conventional methods of paper, cloth and animal skin. I am challenged to do something different and move forward successfully,” said Rassam. .

200 artists working on the project

The creative artist said that the size of the Holy Quran is 6.5 feet by 8.5 feet without frame.

“I have trained my students and a group of talented artists to work on different aspects of the greatest Holy Quran in the world. About 200 artists are currently working on the project, ”said Rassam.

To a question, he said that the iconic project is self-sponsored but that his friends support the initiative.

“I am open to any support from the community. It is a unique big project and not an easy challenge to overcome without massive support from all segments of society,” he said.

In response to a question where the project will be displayed at the Expo, he said it was not yet finalized.

“As a Pakistani, I want it to be exhibited in the Pakistani pavilion. I am also in discussion with other participating countries who wish to present my work in their pavilions,” said Rassam.

Dr Faisal Ikram, President of the Pakistan Dubai Association, said it was a proud moment that an overseas Pakistani and an award-winning artist are doing a wonderful project.
