eMagin Secures New Patent for dPd (TM) Direct Pattern OLED Micro-Display Technology

Exclusive technology supports advanced OLED displays without color filters reducing brightness

HOPEWELL JUNCTION, NY / ACCESSWIRE / March 2, 2021 / eMagin Corporation, or the Company (NYSE American: EMAN), a leader in the development, design and manufacture of active matrix OLED micro-displays used in military and commercial AR / VR devices, and other products of Near Eye Imaging, announced today that it has been granted a new patent from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for the Company’s Direct Patterning Display (dPd ™) technology. The patent, number 10,903,427, which relates to the apparatus and method of direct modeling of an organic material using an electrostatic mask, follows two USPTO patents issued last year and is in addition to the eMagin’s portfolio of 18 fundamental dPd patents and utility applications for OLED modeling, processes and equipment.

“Our latest patent strengthens our technological leadership in brilliant color OLED displays for AR / VR,” said Andrew Sculley, CEO of eMagin Corporation. “Screen brightness is critical for AR and VR devices and for heads-up displays (HUDs) used in bright and daylight environments. Our proprietary dPd technology dramatically improves light output over competing products that require color filters with white OLEDs, reducing light output by approximately 80%. Our roadmap targets color displays with brightness above 28,000 nits by mid-2023, with intermediate brightness of 10,000 nits later this year. This intermediate target brightness is approximately 20 times brighter than traditional color OLED Combining our roadmap for high brightness and the government funding we have secured for equipment, we plan to improve our technological lead and manufacturing to meet the needs of our AR / VR customers.

The company’s dPd technology enables direct structuring of primary RGB color OLED emitters improving light output at ultra-high resolutions. Direct structuring also allows the use of very efficient phosphorescent emitters, leading to a significant increase in brightness. The technology can incorporate improvements under development in traditional white with color-filtered OLED micro-displays.

“In terms of brightness, our dPd technology is ahead today and we plan to stay ahead,” added Sculley.
